Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation (ZMBF) and the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries (MoBEF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to uplift seaweed farmers, especially women and youth, by enhancing climate-resilient seaweed production, value addition and market access.
This MoU signifies a crucial step towards achieving a more prosperous and sustainable future for Zanzibar, leveraging the potential of the blue economy to improve the quality of life for all Zanzibaris.
This partnership will primarily focus on improving the livelihood of seaweed farmers by contributing to enhanced climate-resilient seaweed production, value addition, and marketing, with a specific focus on empowering women and youth.
Key objectives of the collaboration include:
- Promoting and improving sustainable economic inclusion within the Blue Economy priority areas and communities.
- Empowering rural women and youth by enhancing their production capacities and improving their skills in seaweed farming.
- Strengthening seaweed farmers’ production capabilities, livelihoods, and incomes through skills and knowledge transfer to mitigate climate change impacts and improve business sustainability.
- Providing training and support to address the unique challenges faced by Zanzibar women and youth in the seaweed value chain.
- Advocating for awareness-raising initiatives to influence policymakers and foster relevant policy advancements.
- Facilitating collaborative research and development initiatives to enhance understanding and harness the nutritional content of seaweed.
