The Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation (ZMBF), in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) through the JP RWEE project, continues its efforts to build the capacity of seaweed farmers by enabling them to use modern technology in financial management and their daily activities.
Through this digital training, farmers have learned to use mobile phones to save money, lend to each other through the VSLA (Village Savings and Loan Association) system, and manage their group activities more efficiently. This financial system has helped farmers quickly access small loans, increase agricultural capital, and build long-term financial discipline, while fostering social cohesion and economic development within their communities.
In the initial pilot phases, over 150 seaweed farmers from Uzi and Mfumbwi Shehia groups benefited from the training. To date, more than 1,200 seaweed farmers have directly benefited from ZMBF’s efforts through various projects, including JP RWEE and the Ocean Life Project.
This training has focused not only on seaweed production but also on adding value to the crop by teaching how to make various products such as soap, skin oils, lotions, and other items.
ZMBF recognizes that the success of farmers is the foundation of Zanzibar’s economic development. Through its strategies of capacity building, providing equipment, and now connecting them with technology, the organization continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to empowering rural women and youth.
ZMBF will continue to collaborate with various development stakeholders to ensure farmers achieve a higher level of production and efficiency, while also ensuring that Zanzibar fully benefits from economic opportunities through seaweed farming.
